Your Choices For Lip Augmentation

With pouty lips being so popular in the Hollywood world, it's no surprise that those of us not in the celebrity world would also like a pouty smile.

Getting one can be as easy as applying your lipstick in the morning, or it can require a visit to a doctor's visit for injections, as there are a few choices for lip enhancement. It's important to consider the risks and benefits of each kind of plumper.

1 - At home

There are two primary kinds of lip plumpers you can use at home - those that provide a temporary plump look, and those that use different technology to give longer lasting (and cumulative) effect.

a - Short term

These lip plumpers are those that will give you the 'bee stung' look. This is accomplished by increasing circulation in the lips through the addition of things like cinnamon, ginger and peppermint to lip glosses and lipsticks.

Most often these kinds of plumpers or augmentation will at the least give you a 'tingling' feeling on your lips. Some people report the tingling is nearly painful or just nearly intolerable. So be aware of this possible effect when giving one a try.

b - Longer term

These kinds of lip products will cost more than the temporary plumpers. They are often in the form of a cream that you apply to your lips, and they will give an instant perk to your lips but also will provide some long-term benefits.

These are often formulated with hyaluronic acid, peptides or even marine collagen. Although these will cost you more, they also have instant, but also longer-lasting effects. They generally won't sting your lips and they won't cause pain.

2 - In an office

If you are willing to have your lips injected to get the plump look, you can head to a clinic or office where you'll get instant results via an injected product.

Injections are usually formulated with bovine collagen and they are injected into your lips after they have been given a topical anesthesia. The downtime is small - usually a couple of days. Sometimes people report swelling and bruising that might last longer.

Often substances other than bovine collagen are injected into lips. These include:

Synthetic - These substances usually provides a longer lasting result than other collagen or fat treatments, but allergic reactions are possible with this synthetic plumper.

Hyaluronic acid - This is a clear gel that has hyaluronic acid as an ingredient, which is a naturally occurring substance in humans, so allergic reactions are rare. Treatments will likely have to be repeated at six month intervals.

Collagen - This is an injection of your own collagen that's extracted from somewhere else in the body. There is no risk of allergic reaction with this kind of plumper and results are fairly temporary, so the procedure will need to be repeated.

Fat - Similar to the above technique, this injection involves the injection of fat into your lips from other areas of your body usually the thighs or abdomen. Because the fat comes from your own body, there's no risk of allergic reaction and results are almost permanent.

So there you have it.

It can be tempting to try and achieve the big, pouty lip look, but it's important to understand your various options. And this means how they work, and their risks and benefits. As with all options when it comes to enhancing the lips, make sure that you do your research so you can make an informed decision.
